piston ring size for 1600

Post by sevenmilebridge »

I was getting new rings for a 1600 thats ready to put back together found out that the ring size on this motor is the same as a 2000. top ring 2mm second 2.5mm oil 4mm. Question are the pistons in a 1600 the same size as a 2000

The pistons are the same size, skirt length and ring grove as well as crown are different. You can put U20 pistons in an R engine with zero modifications, you can not use R pistons in a U engine without modifications to the skirt of the piston. That said there are other pistons that are even better that use newer technologies.

Thanks the 1600 has the slight dome pistons and are in great shape. The engine was blowing smoke real bad found out it had a broken oil ring. So while it was out why not rebuild should be back on the road again soon.

Be sure to check the top of the bores for “step” wear, it will destroy the top ring lands if there is any step at all!
