1969 1600 main bearings

Post by Kuz1 »

I am new to Datsun , but not new to engines . I am trying to help a friend get his ‘69 1600 roadster back on the road . The engine was dissasembled by a shop sometime around ‘05 . The owner retrieved all he outdated when the shop owner died .Heres my dilemma . This is a five main motor and according to the manual I’m using and another online source, the main bearing journals should be 2.36” or 59.942mm . The crank I have mic’d out at 2.478in or 62.95 mm. The rod journals micd out at standard spec.@ 2.046 in . Are there any markings on the crank or block that could help identify what I have ? Besides an L1600 and an R1600 are there any other options for a 1600?

Going from memory, 2.478 is correct for 5 main as is 2.046". The 2.36 is probably the 3-main spec, but I don't have that in front of me at the moment.

Either way, the block will have an r16 stamp on it and the sn will be over 40000 if 5-main R16.

I don't know the answer but we have a copy of the factory manual in our wiki! The translation has a few funny passages especially for the 1600 section, but it's pretty good... built many an engine from this manual!
