Wire connections 1970 restoration
Coming along on the '70 restoration. I have reattached the dash wiring harness to the dash on the bench, and now attached the dash to the car. It was all in pieces. I repaired many of the plastic connectors and have everything back in place. Most all connections were obvious by where on the harness and what the switches/gauges motors etc. looked like. I am left with two sets of wires that have no obvious connections. The one that bothers me most is under the dash near the multi cluster gauge. they have their own loom exit. One is a heavy gage white with red stripe, the companion is a smaller gage green with white stripe and they both have an open loop connector resembling a ground, but these ain't ground wires. See pic. The other set will be described in the next post so as not to confuse. These are important wires, Not about to hook up the battery to test the system (and lose all the smoke out of my wiring harness) until I figure them out. Clues?

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
Second set is probably not as critical, but a mystery. They are a pair of odd looking spade connectors one red one black, both small gage exiting the harness near the flasher and turn signal switches and clutch switch, but with no obvious female mates in the vicinity. I have not put the steering column back on yet, so maybe they will find their mates then, but I don't think so, because I think I have matched all other connectors between the column and what is left. Clues to these?

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
Mike, I’m not familiar with the high windshield cars, but looking @ the wiring diagram for a 70 model, the large white/Red should connect to the ammeter. Is there a stud on the back of it without a wire? There should be 2 large wires there, white/red & white.
The emergency flasher has a green/white wire on it. But it shouldn’t be a ring connector, so I don’t know.
The 70 1600 had some pollution weirdness with a switch on the clutch & trans, maybe that could be the other wires. Check out the wiring diagrams on this site.
Peace, Pat

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
Th second wires might be for the dash illumination dimmer switch but the colors don’t match the documentation. I just put my dash back together a few weeks ago so I probably should remember (but I don’t). Pat is right though. Something is up with that green/wht having that terminal on it. Big wht/red is definitely the feed from the alternator though and should hook to one of the lugs of the ammeter.

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
Thanks for the replies so far. The Ameter is hooked up already with a large White/red and Red/white wires in place with ring connectors. They were pretty obvious from placement on the harness. These two exit a little further right (toward the passenger side) but would barely reach the multi gauge. They seem to be a pair with the same length and the same funky connector ends. Not the Ameter though. The wiring diagram (and those things really are Greek to me) have numerous White/red wires always dark which I guess means heavy gage, running to several things. I will analyze that further. Hoping someone would say - "oh, that is the feed to the framistram" or something. Still looking.....Thanks!!

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
And yes, the '70 has a lot of extra connections for smog stuff, most of which I am not using since I totally de-smogged the engine on rebuild. In fact it is set up like a '66-'67 with the alt on the cool side and an early manifold and SU set. So some left-over connectors in the engine bay on both sides. Also not using side markers, so those are unused, but these under dash connectors are worrisome

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
Mine is also a desmogged 70 but I had no left over connections when I put mine back together last month. Could your harness have been altered somewhere in its history maybe? I’m definitely puzzled.

Thanks for the links to the awesome diagrams. So much easier to understand than the standard WD. These will help a lot. I'll report back.

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
Well, the de-smogging eliminates the connection to the mystery piece on the intake manifold, but since I updated my alternator to a self exciting unit, and moved it, and am using an electronic ignition, I have alternator wires, Voltage regulator wires, distributer wires, coil wires, and ballast resistor wires that are not being used. Sorry for the mis-statement. Also side marker connections that are not used. I am examining the super drawings that y'all provided.

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
OK, thanks for the drawings! The white/red is the main power to the fuse box (pretty important wire, that one), the green/white also attaches to the fuse box (horn?) anyway both ring terminals. I totally overlooked that when hooking everything up, assuming all fuse box connections were via plug connectors. I never claimed to be an electrician!! Anyway that is solved. I am still not sure about the 2 spade connectors near the flasher units, and they do not show up on the diagram. Thinking it is a '70 only connection and I am guessing it is to a door buzzer. I have a part I cannot identify and cannot find mounting holes for. Here is a pic. If it is a door buzzer, I think I will leave it in the spare parts box. I hate them. Am I correct?

Re: Wire connections 1970 restoration
Door buzzer, maybe key in ignition. Only 70s had it. Should be a pin switch on the door pillar.

The pics of the mystery item are for the the 1970-only door open buzzer. Just connected mine.roadsterdude1600 wrote: Mon Sep 25, 2023 1:39 pm Second set is probably not as critical, but a mystery.
