I'd bet they won't touch it ...if they re known for speedo repair, only a dealer or dedicated speedo shop can R&R the head since 79?
About 3 forms to fill out with customer / owner & tech , to state miles and tech ,and manager noterized at dealership and state inspector notified ( even though its federal ) over the internet
We used to pull out the head to send to KC speedo, for repair cause the cars got broken into there .....& that got squelched
It's $$$$$ fines

Redroadster are smoking something that makes you say crazy things. There are lots speedometer shops that are qualified to make repairs coast to coast without any drama. Please don’t give bad advice, people might think you know what you’re talking about.

Dear Dave

R & R ing a speedo head by a person other than a person employed by a shop that is certified to do speedo work is a felony a 10 yr federal felony since 1979 est.
I a dealer tech for many decades know these rules very well, ...but call your state highway patrol inspector and ask him about it
Seems you have trouble comprehending .
Our only speedo shop here closed10 -15yrs ago ,As its mostly replace not repair
I'm thinking that form that's to be filled out by the tech, notarized stating that they have the car in there shop, they are blowing that off to be a nice helpful guy ? what's the shop I'll call them up
Oh and you can't pull a dash either as that's tampering with the VIN , if it's on the dash

I wonder if there's some variability state to state or based on the age of the car. I recently had my 67.5 speedo rebuilt by Tacoma Speedometer using a donor speedo for some critical pieces. The tech called me and asked what mileage I wanted it to show or if I wanted it set to zero, saying it did not matter on a car this old. I went with zero...

A quick google search yields hundreds of companies who do this work also. Maybe things have changed. I know mileage is not a factor in my state for older cars given that titles are issued with "mileage exempt" statements on them (or no physical title at all, if it's old enough).

Email the questions to the FBI ( they will get back to you with the statute
It was a state regulated until 79 then the federal government made it a 10 yr sentence +fines when a dealership hires a newby tech
they make sure to go over all this with him
Like nothing that could change emissions ( customers wanting aftermarket parts installed )
, the VIN , and speedo aswell ,& to consult the S M

Redroadster,
I think you have totally missed the point! My self included we are saying that there are speedo shops everywhere that do this type of work, if this is truly illegal all these shops would have been shutdown. Please give a rest, enough is enough. Re-read the posts mine included and think about it. And maybe if you are still concerned about this then you can be a national hero call the FBI and help them shutdown all the illegal speedometer shops in the nation.

Anybody else here watch WKRP in Cincinnati back in the day?
There was a HILARIOUS episode where Johnny Fever was paranoid about the phone cops.

On a similar note, when I had my gauges renovated here in Oz, the speedo came back with the same reading as when I gave it to them.
Don't jump to conclusions here, I was told they didn't have the necessaries to re-furbish the wheels and the digits on the wheels.
So, a little disappointing but if it were a 1927 Chev. I would have been OK  :? :?
Nissanman, just trying to help.

Redroadster, are you an undercover special agent, you are always bringing up the law engine conversions, instrumentation repairs and smog laws. I think you just might be a deep cover plant here in 311s.org. This might be it for me I could be in big trouble talking the way I do. Are you stasi police?
