Is this good enough alignment or should it be better? R16

I put shims under the shoe(s) to take out most of the slack in the chain until the oil pressure it there.

Be careful with the R16/20 as there are two different types of cam gears and cams, metric and SAE. There is a tech wiki article about this. Read it and make sure you are putting the correct combination of components together.

That's not a great cam gear from the wear ,I see.....I mean crank gear , both
You should see the difference anew gears would make tightening up the chain. The crank will break a tooth off soon IMO
A side by side comparison should be done

This engine had been rebuilt when I got it. Based on the teeth wear, I’m thinking they are matched/original. Engine was running fine, I only took of the cover to clean it. Just wondering if the dots should be aligned better?

If you rotate the motor slightly they will aline. Is this position based on the timing mark on the crank pully?

Yep, pretty worn. Money well spent for sure.

Can these gears be removed and replaced without pulling the shafts out? Sure this is a yes.

Yes they can be replaced without removing the crankshaft or camshaft. Be sure to verify which camshaft is in your engine as the metric cam and SAE camshafts are interchangeable.

I have the 411SSS so I'm guessing I have SAE. If I buy a new matching set of gears, Metric or SAE, will either fit? Guessing I need SAE 3 main set.

The way to check it is to check the thread pitch of the bolt that holds the large sprocket to the cam, or check it by threading in both a 3/8 bolt and a 10mm bolt. The 3/8 will fit in both camshafts and a 10mm will only thread into the metric camshaft if I remember correctly.

New gears and chain installed, much improved.
