I have what was thought to be a C cam, however it appears to be an unmarked B cam when measured out with a set of calipers. I have a new B cam that I measured it against and it appears to be the same. I had it checked by Elgin cams and they were the ones who found the discrepency. So the question is has anyone else stumbled across a B cam with no markings on it?

How can you guys talk a B cam and 1600 cam? Any numbers or mark on the cam? I'm new to Datsun so I'm researching and learning.

Im pretty sure the U20(2000) cams are either A or B... and are marked on one end.
The B cam is used in the Solex carb car, and the A cam is used in the SU carb car. Solex=good.... SU=SUCKS!!

Ok, to bring you up to speed, on the U20 there were 2 common cams, the A cam that came in the SU cars, the B cam came in the solex cars, and the C cam (also known as the Solex 2) cam is almost a mythical creature. The A and B cams have an A and a B stamped into the back. The C cam is reputed to be unmarked. The A cam is a .440 lift at 256 degrees, the B is .460 at 280 degrees (however there have been several different B cams made over the years, all about the same lift), and the C was .490 at 296 degrees of rotation. The cam I have is unmarked, but the lobes measure out exactly the same as the B cam I have.

SUs are no harder to tune than any other dual carb setup. In fact, they are easier than most others to include the Solex, Weber, Dellorto, Mikuni Solex iterations. Those have multiple jets and jet blocks (emulsion tubes) as well as tiny passages which easily clog. The SUs however, have only one needle and jet. With folks like Keith and their knowledge and generosity, the jetting of them is super simple.

As long as they are not worn out, they stay in tune just as well as any other dual carb setup. Worn two barrel sidedrafts can be a nightmare with LOADS more areas for problems from leaky shafts and such.

I think that a set of clean SUs with the brass oil damper caps and overflow bolts is a very nice look. Most are so covered with grime that they look like old used oil pumps hanging on the side of the engine though. Nasty Webers and the like are just as ugly...

ok, so i didnt really know what I was talkin about....lol, whats new? But anyways, I think a set of dirty webers/solexs look better than a set of polished SUs.... just my opinion, but I still want an upright 4 barrel!

Where would I pick up a pair of the brass caps?

First, I want to apologize to Will for participating in the hijacking of this thread.

The brass caps were standard on the pre 67 1600s. They fit all year Roadster SU carbs. They can be tought to find though.

On the cam, I have seen some cams where the mark was VERY faint. I don't doubt that some made it through without being stamped - especially when installed rather than as replacemetn parts. I have heard of the C cams having some kind of code stamped on them, but don't recall what it was specifically.

I really hope that wasn't a swing at me seeing as my car is primered. Oh by the way, the car runs fine, I put 600 miles on it over the weekend, without the sightest bit of trouble. I'm just trying to find out if there were some B cams that came unmarked. If we could get back to the topic at hand that would be great.
