rod in center of windshield ?

can anyone tell me what the purpose is of the metal rod that runs up the middle of the windshield on the inside of the 1966 & 1967 311. Thanks

Most importantly it keeps the soft top from pulling the center of the windshield clean off of the glass. I thought it looked cool without it but found out the hard way why it is there.

I had to do a repair on the road while at a gas stop. Good thing I carry tools with me. I now have mine in place and no more problems. Live and learn heh!!

The sky IS blue. It is that way so that it would match the color Sora Blue of my Roadster!
