Most importantly it keeps the soft top from pulling the center of the windshield clean off of the glass. I thought it looked cool without it but found out the hard way why it is there. I had to do a repair on the road while at a gas stop. Good thing I carry tools with me. I now have mine in place and no more problems. Live and learn heh!!
