shaved door handles ?

I recently bought a 67 spl311 and it has a roll bar & shaved door handles on the outside. The holes were even filled in where the handles were. Should the direction of restoration be as a race car ? Were cars originally sold with roll bars ? It is in the rear area of the car only, so it doesn't look like a "racing cage". Thanks

that was a gorgeous car ! So... why does one take off the handles & how do you open the door if you have the roof on & windows up ? I am lucky atthis point that it is missing it's windwing windows , as that's the only way to get into it.

There was a primered 67.5 on ebay a while back with shaved door handles. The owner was going to install door popers(w/alarm) to open t he door. Wonder if its the one you own now? Any pics?

On the Purple car that Alvin provided links to (Ken's Car)...

He removed both the wing windows and the driver/passenger windows. There are NO windows! True roadster style.

Since there are no windows, you just open the doors from the inside of the car.

A roll bar was available in Japan as early as 1966 - perhaps earlier. North American cars had some of the mounts for the roll bar in the 67.5 model year, and the full set of mounts are there in 68 and later. The factory bar sold in the US and Canada will fit in an earlier car (mine has one), but accomodations need to be made for mounts.

Post pics somewhere and I will take a look to see if that is a factory piece.

Shaved door handles

I bought my '66 Roadster with shaved door handles. The guy I bought it from said it was a "racer", but that is a really loose term. "Racer" Roadster can mean anything to the owner of the car and is subjective at best. My car was a Dad/Son project that was meant for the weekend AutoX thing. Was it a true "racer", probably not, but they thought so. The great thing about any car is that IT IS YOUR CAR. So, with that in mind, if you are a purist at heart, purify. If you have a penchant for the wildside go for it. How boring would it be if ALL Roadsters were the same, except different colors. Personnaly, I love going to the Roadster shows and seeing all the crazy tricked out things different people do to their Roadsters. Last year I attended the Solvang show and up until that time, was not 100% sure in which way I was going to go with my Roadster "look". After seeing all the different variations and ideas, I was able to come away with my own inspiration. I definately knew what color I was NOT going to paint my Roadster. SO, I guess what I am trying to say here, is do your own thing. There will be people out there who will have their "opinion" of your car, but does it really matter if your the one happy with your Roadster??? I put a link for you to see another "racer" roadster.

Have Fun !!!

Alvin, my response to Katekylemom was to this portion of the question, which was the first thread. read on. It was just a general observation and I think wholly positve for all Roadster owners. I hope you can appreciate it as well.

thanks for all the help on this. So what I am learning is do what I want & not worry about trying to keep it original and as far as the door handles, unless you drive the car w/o a top on (the car that is) I am not going to be able to open the door so put the handles back on. Thanks for all the help.

be nice to each other guys
