Vin plate

I’ve had my ‘66 on non-op status for a few years and now that it’s running again, my insurance company said I need to get it inspected or I can self inspect by using a link where I have to snap specific photos in a certain amount of time from the same location. Anyway, I can’t see any Vin numbers on the frame. I went down there under the carbs with a wire brush and scraped but can’t bring up anything. What I was thinking of doing is just ordering a blank Datsun vin plate and stamping my info on it and riveting it to the fire wall. Anyone ever done this, is it a bad idea and where can I get a blank plate? Thanks

Datsunparts.com has the blank plates. If you look on Datsunroadster.com, there is a pretty good drawing of exactly where the vin is stamped. It's more under the washer tank than it is the carburetors

A vin plate on the firewall isn’t much different than the factory plate on the cowl. If they are specifically asking for a photo of the vin on the frame, neither of those locations will qualify.

The plate up on top is actually a model ID plate, not a vin plate. The vin is only on the frame for 68 and earlier cars.

On my 1968, the VIN (model *dash* number) is both punched into the frame rail and punched onto the rectangular aluminum data plate affixed by JIS screws to the top of cowl, covered by the closed hood, which also carries engine type and number, along with other standard specifications.
On my 1969, the same is true, with the addition of a black aluminum strip riveted to the front of the dash on driver's side, with VIN (model *dash* number) visible from outside through the bottom of the drivers side windshield.

The VIN plate happened in 82 before that you had serial # plate . the VIN tells the country of manuf.,model , trim group last 8 are the serial
# , VIN s are 17 character , J = Japan. N or 1= North America, our cars may look different but are the same chassis W,S , I'd try to age the new plate 50 yrs
I know ours tell the model though

The vin is on the frame and under hood plate for all years. 69 and 70 have it on the dash as well.

So the ‘68 dash has a space where a vin plate could go but the ‘68 didn’t actually get a plate there?

The dash recess with riveted serial number/VIN plate commenced with 1969 model year production, in late 1968. 1968 and earlier model year production have no such feature on the dash. Only on cowl and frame.
