Psst -- Want to Buy a Lid for Twelve Bucks?

How many roadsters are missing the lid from their original locking fuel/petrol cap? If retaining the locking feature is essential, one can either shell out big bucks for a new one or less for a used one (and then carry around a third key that doesn’t match any other lock on the car in either case). A third alternative is Dean’s kit:

https://datsunparts.com/collections/fue ... t?variant=

A fourth alternative, if retaining the original cap is essential but the locking feature is dispensable, is to buy one of these:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/192834575067?_ ... 1465.m3507

Disassemble the new cap and remove the lid (held on by a screw and spring), then reassemble and give it sans lid to the kid down the street who rides an old Honda. Disassemble your oem cap and very slightly enlarge (from 11/64" to 3/16") the mounting hole for the lid. Remove the locking component (shown in photo) and store in a secure place in case you ever wish to return it to service. Screw the new lid firmly in place, reassemble, and you're done.

An oem cap (no key) that came from a parts car is shown in the photos. After installation, readjustment of the filler tube to move the raised part on the lid to the correct six o'clock position will be necessary to avoid a citation from the fuel cap authorities (please look away, Ted).

One may be able to back off just enough on the securing screw to allow the lid to pivot, but would then need to JB Weld the screw in place to keep it from turning. Because my replacement cap from the parts car came without a key anyway, I chose to fix the lid in place with the screw.

With a memory like a sieve for the innocuous, mundane or routine, I live in a perpetual state of panic every time I fuel up - ‘Did I forget my fuel cap on top of the pump this time?’ 🤔🤔🤔

The hardship is real, yo … Last week I forgot how old I was (for at least several seconds) when asked by my optimist - Several seconds is all it would take to absentmindedly depart and be parted from my expensive parts.

You have helped to place a weary and troubled mind at easy. Thank you … Steve.

Wait … this won’t help if I lose it! 😉

That’s going to freak Ted out. He won’t be able to grade whether the gas cap is on properly.

Will the $12 cap work on the roadster? If so I would just use one as is for daily use if I worry about losing the roadster one. Just put the roadster one on when you have a meet up. For $12 buy two or three and use the lid off one for a repair.

The $55k roadster, if you look closely the cap seems to be slightly to the right.... oh my.

And I'm old enough to remember when you could buy a 'lid' for $12. It's been 47 years since I had any of that.

According to my expense records going back to 1980, I bought my Roadster locking gas cap, NEW from Rallye, on August 8, 1987 for $27.78 :!: 8)

The cap itself is too large to fit a roadster filler neck, so only the lid can be made to fit a standard roadster cap. And, I have no idea -- absolutely none -- what you and redroadster may be alluding to. 😇

This is Washington, it's now legal to buy roadster lids here.

Brian over @ Sin City has this. Read the description, it is for those that like to tinker around for a fix. I asked him previously; he didn't think the lid by itself would fit on an original Cap.

I have an aftermarket locking cap on my 1970 high windshield car. Would love to get back to the original, non-locking, chrome twist on cap. Does anyone know what the options are for that? I've seen these but not sure they would fit my filler neck:

I doubt Nissan still makes them...

You know, some ‘70s cars came with the locking gas caps as well (specifically non-evap ones).

Which is yours?

My 70 car came with the stock gas cap - I purchased the locking cap myself, and unfortunately, I tossed the stock one. :-(

Neither of the caps I ordered worked. The tab length on them was too long, and the inside diameter of the caps were too large. Here's the measurements of the filler neck on my car:

I figure a diameter of 1.250 - 1.312" for the cap, and a tab length of 1.500 - 1.625" of the bayonet on the cap.

I've been digging around on the web for something around this size. So far coming up empty (no pun intended).

What is the width of the two grooves in the tube?
1/2” or 11/16”
