There were no shims on either striker on my '66. On my '67, the RH has the shim as pictured. The LH striker has a rubber shim cut from an old AT&T mousepad.

The stock piece is anodized steel not quite 1/8-inch thick.

Probably a silly question, but how necessary is this shim?

If your doors close correctly and the panel lines are good with out it, then you don't need it. If there is a shim, then is was probably necessary for proper door closure.

I would note that I am not certain this particular shim affects panel lines.
