A huge thanks! You guys were right on the money. When I knocked out the U bracket and the flat insert bracket that was installed upside down, I was able to press down the welded-in steering support bracket enough to clear the gauge and slide it out the back of dash.
I am doubtful this kind of gauge in the rear of gauge body could happen with just tightening down the dash. See picture of rear of gauge.
Understood on point that U bracket mounts on top of steering column (inside welded-in support bracket) and flatter bracket under column with slight concave surface facing the column.
