Appliance wheels dealer option

Post by Captainkaos »

My ‘68 SRL is entered in the Japanese Class of the La Jolla Concours event in two weeks. I’m running Appliance mesh wheels that came on the car. The event allows period correct items if they can be documented. I’ve read numerous times that these wheels were a “dealer option” but have never seen anything to support that. Any chance anyone has a copy of a brochure or some type of dealer literature to document these were an option? Thank you

Here's an ad from 1969 with the dealer option mesh wheels.
I have a set of these and they are aluminum centers that is bolted to the chrome steel barrels.

That’s great, thank you! Even looks to be a ‘68 in the ad! My wheels are the one piece with smaller mesh openings.

I don’t think “dealer option” means a thing, any dealer can offer any accessory he wants. Ray’s ad however shows that they are definitely period correct. You should be golden😎

For the record, the wheels in the ad and the picture above are Trans Am wheels (aluminum center and chrome steel barrel) The appliance wheels are one piece aluminum. If the sanctioning body is nit picking, that may not be good enough for them.

About 2/3 of the way down page 1 of Alvin's wheel pictures there are five roadsters with the "Appliance Mesh (Dealer option) 14 x 6" that Sid is referring to here. They have "Made in Japan" cast into the back side in addition to the size.

Ray, thank you for the generous offer, but with current gas prices I’ll probably just roll the dice with the judges 😁. Jay you are correct, my wheels are the ones you’ve identified in Alvin’s post.
