Differential drain bolt - O-Ring?

Almost done stripping down the pumpkin and getting it ready for paint. Removed the drain and fill plug, and it looks like the drainplug has some sort of o-ring near the end on the inside?

Is there an o-ring there, what does it do, and should it be replaced? Or is that the remains of a magnet?

The parts diagram doesn't show any washer/seal on either plug.
The drain plug may have a magnet attached to it.
Just a tip from yours truly.
When you reinsert the plugs, use a good quality thread sealer and DO NOT over-torque them.
My pet hate is plugs done up so freaking tight that maintenance is virtually impossible

Okay, what looked like an O-ring was just gunk with metal in it, attracted to the magnet. I was just worried that it was another piece of rubber I had to replace.

Follow up to my stupid questions. Does the drain plug sit flush when reinstalled in the pumpkin? I never got a picture of it, but its really tight with about a 1/4 inch still sticking out.

It is supposed to stick out that much, normal on pipe threads.

Its a tapered thread. When its snug, stop or you'll crack the housing. A little pipe sealant helps reduce seepage.

It's best to get the grit out of the / off the diff assy.
With brake kleen w a straw , the grit wears the bearings .
