1600 oil filter mounting

Post by Habitat.pat »

I have 2 67.5 1600 engines that have identical screw on oil filter mounts. I also have what I believe to be the correct oil filter for it, a Nissan 15208-H8920 and a NAPA 1512. When I mount either filter on either of the mounts the filter only screws on 2.5 threads before the gasket makes contact. I'm wondering if this is normal or not. All other vehicles (non-Roadsters) I've had screw on at least 5 threads.

Basically,my question is whether I need to find a different mount, replace the pipe in the adapter with a longer one, or just ignore it.

Thanks, and be safe.

Peace
Pat

Hey Pat. I wouldn’t trust anything only held on by 2 1/2 threads, let alone the oil filter. I would recommend you buy a K&N Oil Filter (part# HP-2005) to see if it spins on any further. If not, no loss really, as you can still use it once you decide which of your options above to go with … Anything but option 3: Don’t Ignore it. 😉

As I recall the threaded fitting/insert that the oil filter screws on to also screws on to the mount, so it can be screwed out a bit to increase the number of threads for the filter to screw on to... I think... check!

The correct number for a WIX filter is 51512,...NAPA's 1512 does reference the manufacturer's part number as 51512....so,...I don't know....I've always used genuine WIX 51512, available at my local Oreilly Auto Parts....

Thanks to all. I’ll see what I can do to unscrew the pipe & also look for a K&N filter.

I have some OEM filters on order.

I checked both my mounts and neither of them will unscrew, they are cast in.
I bought some OEM filters and they also only screw on 2.5 turns.
Haven't found a K&N filter locally but will continue looking.
I'd like to ask if someone would kindly check their filter fit next time y'all change oil & let me know how many turns yours goes on.
I will be going to a machine shop today & will see if they can figure out a way to safely correct this.
