K&N air filter for a Datsun 2000

Post by Eric F »

Ok, I finally went out and found a K&N filter that will fit on a 2000.

K&N E-2865 Approximately $55 from any dealer who carries them
Product Style: Round Air Filter
Height: 2.313 in (59 mm)
Inner Wire: No
Inside Diameter: 11.125 in (283 mm)
Outside Diameter: 13 in (330 mm)

I will preface this by saying this project isn't for a impatient person. This isn't gonna just pop in there and you're done. It takes some work and patience to get the filter to fit in the stock filter housing.

It's a deformable round air filter and fits in the stock 2000 filter housing pretty snug. It's not as thick as a stock air filter, so you'll have to use washers to space the air filter bolts The only problem I had was that the long center section has no support and tends to sag inward and not provide a good seal. I'm building a brace out of 1/4" roundbar to help hold the filter in place though, so will let you know how that turns out. I had thought about modifying my stock filter holder, but decided against it wanting to keep everything ready to go back to stock if needed. Good luck and if you need any help with getting this in the stock housing, please don't hesitate to ask!

Finally, please keep this on topic. this is for K&N filters for the Datsun 2000. We don't really need to have some vender posting in here saying he/she/it has some other option available on their website. Thanks!

Eric,

Great tip! Here is something that may help. Go to the local hobby shop and buy a piece of music wire. It does not have to be a heavy gauge wire. Using the stock air cleaner element and the replacement K&N units as a guide, bend it to make a support that will go on the inside of the element. You can solder it to make it a solid piece so that it does not damage the new unit. That wire support going around the inner circumference of the element in the center will provide the support needed to keep the element from sagging.

Hiya Sid,
Yeah, I tried that, but it didn't have the strength to hold it in place. :( I managed to carefully tighten the filter and it's got good seal without sagging, but I'll tell you what... you gotta have a ton of patience!! Definately not for a quick tuneup and throw everything back together deal!

Well that stinks! Maybe it needs to be a stiffer wire. If you want another 2000 aircleaner assembly to play with so that you are not working in that tiny hole, let me know. I think that I have a spare out in the pile...
