Pinion gear for speedo drive R&R

Ordered and recieved a new pinion gear for the speedometer drive assembly. It looks like I need to remove the small pin to release the old pinion from the housing but so far I am not able to get it to budge. Am I correct in assuming that it should just be a matter of driving it through. I cannot get any tool on the end to pull it through and do not want to damage the pin by trying to drive it through if there is some other method. As you can see in the picture, the pin does not stick out of the housing far enough to get any type of tool on it to pull it through. Please advise.

I’ve never replaced that gear but looking @ your photos & a photo of the gear, I don’t see any way to replace the gear without driving out the pin.

Peace,
Pat

Hola Baja.

Do you have a photo of the new gear?

Good luck with this.

Should look like this. I have never pulled one apart, but that pin must enter that channel (without touching the shaft) to prevent the pinion from moving to and fro in the carrier??

The retainer / roll pin is easily driven out (and replaced) with the correctly sized punch.

OK, this makes sense, the roll pin runs under the shaft along the milled out Pinion channel. so it can be driven out from either side? The pin Dean sells doesn't appear to be tapered that I can tell, so you should be able to punch it out from either hole? Not the OP, just trying to learn.

Thanks

May be driven from either side, and the pins are omnidirectional, not tapered.

rwmann was correct, on both posts. I just needed to find (make) the correct size punch. And the pin was not tapered. Dac21 's picture of the replacement pinion is also correct , the same one that I ordered. Number of teeth in pinion gear is easily identified by color, otherwise they are identical. SO, for the first time since I purchased the car several years ago, I have a working speedometer. WOOHOO!
In appreciation for everyones responses and help, I will share my facepalm moment of the day. Before reassembling the 90 degree adapter and hooking up the speedo cable, I wanted to test that the speedo cable was properly seated in the speedo gauge. Hooked up my drill at the transmission end and had the wife observe the gauge. Nothing, gauge inoperable! CR@P! Walk away. Open a beer, take a moment to review possibilities. Turns out I probably should have checked the rotational direction of the drill. No where near the dumbest thing ive ever done, but still pretty embaressing.

Just as I've been telling everyone for a long time: Beer makes us smarter!!!

Cheers. Sounds like a successful day.
