Convertible top latches

Post by spl310 »

A lot of people have surmised that the latches for a 1967.5 were modified in design to work with the visors, and that the earlier ones wouldn't work with the visors. When I picked up SRL #237, the top frame that I found with it had the early wire bail type latches common on the 65-67 1600s. I tried to put the top up this past weekend, and what do you know, those latches DO work with the visors. I suspect that the design change was to make them less likely to pop open when you hit a bump.

They also probably changed the style as the early wire ones broke easily and the cam style of the 67.5 is more robust. This is why when I made my early latches in 304 stainless I made the 67.5 style.

Sid:
I have been running the early wire type latches on my 67.5 since I got a top for it. I got a donor top frame from a 67 w/wire latches as mine did not come with a soft top. The hard top it did come with used the cam style latches. I never new there was a question of whether or not they worked with visors, as I had never put those on (I do have them). So, good to know.

To be fair, the 67.5 type is a little easier with the visors, but it certainly isn't required.

Thanks Buddy. I realized that I am travelling too much to get things done in the timetable that I would like, but am working to make a change. I hope to have good news to report next week!

Are the 67.5 cam latches interchangeable with the earlier wire latches?

Yes the 67.5 latches will work in place of the 66 and 67 latches and provide the opportunity to have sun visors.

You can have visors with the earlier wire latches. They work just fine. The latches interchange.
