Setting the points gap

Post by the550 Roadster »

I am starting a tune-up and other preventative maintenance on the 67.5 2000. I’m having trouble getting the contact arm and cam lobe to align. I can’t get a wrench on the lower pulley given the fan shroud and rocking the ignition switch doesn’t work. And the gap recommendation is 45-55mm for solex carbs; is their a more refined number range some of you have found to work best. Suggestions. Thanks Rob

When I have done this previously on my points equipped 68 2000, I removed the sparkplugs to eliminate resistance from cylinder compression. I then pulled on a fan blade to line up the rubbing block on the points to the highest point on the distributor camshaft. I have since replaced my points with a Petronix unit.

I generally just put my transmission in 5th gear and just push on the car while watching the cam. Even with the plugs in you can bump it pretty easily. You can break a plastic fan blade by pulling on it.

Note where the pointer on the distributor base is and pull the distributor out and put it in a vise, adjuste the points and put it back in the base and lock it down. The beauty of the Datsun/Nissan base is you can I’ll and replace the distributor without fear of messing up the timing.

A dwell meter works too , cranking it and adjust
Best to use a brass feeler guage

Thanks all that made recommendations. I thought about pulling the plugs to reduce resistance. I’m going to give the 5-gear roll and plug method a try.
