Ive never been a big fan of chrome. With that being said I have not seen anyone who has painted all their chrome pieces. I am thinking about doing all my chrome pieces in flat black with painting the car black or a dark green

Jason Rector has a 67 that is blacked out. I'm not a fan, I like chrome.

It’s your car, do it up the way you like. That being said, when the MGs switched to black bumpers, I think it took away something from the looks of the car … but I’m a traditionalist. Some may like it, some won’t. Pic is only for reference:

Let's see if there's any good pics in what I hereby declare to be "The Alvin Archive." We are all open to whatever you want to try. I don't know what you would need to do to properly paint over chrome, but it shouldn't hurt a bumper that needs to be rechromed anyway, or stop you from plating it later if desired. Chrome service is getting expensive and harder to find with how environmentally nasty I hear it is. You've got nothing to lose unless you're damaging an otherwise good piece.

I know I'll never have a front bumper on my car again, so my decent front will be for sale whenever I get around to selling it.

You could try a spray wrap. If it works and you like it great, if not then it is easier to remove than paint.

To me it always looks like "guy couldn’t afford chrome" but it’s your car, do what you like.

I have seen many roadster with painted or powdercoated chrome bumpers, tail lights, headlight buckets, etc.

Kevin's SRL immediately comes to mind:

I think Black compliments Kevin’s Silver. I tried black over Red Z cars and 510s and it was ok. But not for my roadster. I think if I was to paint chrome I would go with the Lotus Elan Silver on bumpers. It looks great on every color they did Lotus.

Paint doesn’t stick to chrome very well and on top of that the paint will scratch easily showing the chrome underneath which looks worse than dull chrome. I’m in the camp that just doesn’t think it looks good at all. Of course if your chrome is in really sad shape then you don’t have much to loose. I like RBMann’s idea about the spray wrap if you want to experiment.

The paint on Jason's chrome is insanely tenacious...

Surface prep is everything! Roughing up the chrome will certainly help, but if you have decent chrome and don’t want to damage it then it’s hard to make it stick. You are going to need something better than a rattle can for sure.
