While talking to Dave Firestone about transmissions, one of the local roadster experts, the conversation turned to drain plugs. My transmission does not have a square drive plug but a hex head like my engine drain plug. I am wondering what surprises the previous owner has left for me when I drain the trans.

All of this leads to the question, how many times can you reuse the copper crush washer seal? Maybe something the PO should have replaced which again makes me nervous.

I keep a bag of the copper seals on hand & change it when the seal looks flat. I think they are less than $0.50 each so it’s good insurance to just replace it at all/most oil changes.

I already have the Datsun magnetic plug. I just hope it will work because I don't know the reason the hex head one was used instead.

Probably a case of a butchered original plug
I just don't understand these folk who tighten fill and drain plugs to the ultimate stage of tightness.
With a smear of thread sealant you can prevent any leaks without resorting to brute strength.
Just a pet hate I have

Some prefer to torque through and beyond the yield and fracture, then back off one-eighth of a turn, making removal and replacement the next person’s problem.
