Had a good look at mine, still not on the dash and I reckon it is aluminium alloy.
Certainly not a pressed stainless trim nor plastic.

Thoughts on the best way to clean it up / polish it?

Wipe it clean with a wax and grease remover then carefully use a metal polish.
Something like Autosol Metal Polish is suitable.


Don't be too heavy handed with the polish.

IIRC, the early ones were a pot metal that was chromed, later (67.5) are stainless that has been painted that lovely silver color...

Beware,...there are several pieces that are aluminum, or maybe brass (vent / heater control face plates on the early) and pot metal shift emblem (on the late), that I KNOW, are copper plated first, before the chrome....polish too much and you will expose the copper underneath,...ask me how I know...

It's very likely, but I'm NOT sure, the pot metal dash surround trim, might be copper plated underneath the chrome as well...
