‘66 Soft top rear support bar

Post by jrgs3365 »

When I bought my ‘66 it did not have a top. So now I have a frame and a new top but I don’t have the rear support bar that slips into the top for the teardrops so I’m going to make one. Does anyone have any suggestions? Pictures? Or better yet, where I can buy one?

The vendors have them. Not hard to duplicate.

I just had my top boot cover restitched and repaired after the stitching fell out that keeps the bar in place. After it was restitched I had to cut a small slit in one of the end "pockets" to allow me to move the bar far enough to get it into the other end. I stitched and glued it shut. Long story short, consider how you're going to get the bar inside the top properly. I don't know if they were stitched in place at the factory or what...

I don’t think anyone is reproducing them, and I don’t think it would be very easy to make one. They are about 1/2 wide, but have a pretty good curve to them. You would have to start with a 1 1/2” wide piece and then cut it down to about 1/2 wide throughout the length, with the center being almost 1” higher than the ends when laid on edge. Then you need to grind the bevels to slip under the two chrome clasps on the deck lid. I’m not sure, but it may be a type of spring steel or something to resist bending, although most get slightly bent anyway, and near impossible to get perfectly flat again. Some vendors may have used ones.
P.S.this pertains to tall windshield models, I don’t know if low windshields are different.

Mine is a '67. The bar is made of spring steel which holds the top tight to the body surface all the way across.

Probably not necessary to reproduce these. We have four or five dozen of these loose with more still in roached rag tops and rear boots. They will last a while for those who need them.
