Datsun 1600 swapped to U20, still has 4 speed
So the previous owner put a u20 in my 1968 but the transmission is 4speed. So I’m wondering what needs to be done to get a 5 speed transmission in there. Would I need a new clutch? Do I still need the backing plate since I have a u20? Also does anybody know where I could find a drive shaft for the speed? Thanks in advance guys.

You may not need the back plate, you have to measure what you have to know. You will need the crossmember, mount, transmission, shift plate, drive shaft and possibly the speedometer cable. The clutch should be fine.

May also need to revise the speedometer pinion and possibly the carrier/sleeve, too, depending on which differential ratio and rear tire diameter are installed.

You will also have to modify the transmission tunnel. The 5 spd is shorter, so you will have to open the shifter hole up. Its very obvious where it needs to be reworked.
