How to split leaf springs?

Post by Egz »

I'm a little confused. I'm looking at this center nut, and it appears to be just a flat head with no provisions for a socket at all. Its just a smooth barrel all the way down, almost like its part of the top leaf.

Does this whole thing turn? Am I staring at something that is probably rusted together and won't separate?

Definitely has seen better days! The Center bolt should have a nut on the other end. Just use two C-clamps to hold the springs tightly together, undo the nut and tap it through (it’s not threaded). You may want to soak that one in penetrating oil for a bit. Someone posted a pic of a do it your self bolt/spacer/nut combo a while back. You’ll probably need to replace those once you’re done (pic attached).

You’re welcome - Glad it helped. The nut should actually attach the axle cradle bracket to the springs.

Yup, helped alot. The one sprint had a regular nut, but the one I was working on had some sort of threaded collar for a nut holding it together, which threw me for a loop.

Lol … 50+ years of backyard repairs will do that!
