How much grease in the front hub?

Time for another stupid question: Getting ready to reassemble the front hubs with new bearings. Upon cleaning it out, there was about a pound of grease in the cavity between the front and read bearings. Now I know the bearings need to be greased good, but I'm confused as to the purpose of the grease between them.

Should I pack that center part of the hub with grease in addition to greasing the bearings, or was that just a mistake from a prior owner?

Thanks!

Bearing manufacturers specify 2/3 full. leave plenty of air space. When the cavity is too full excessive heat is generated resulting in premature breakdown of the grease.

Page 129 of the SPL service manual (available in Tech wiki at http://www.311s.org/PDFs/SPL311ServiceManualSML.pdf) shows a cross section of the assembled hub with a note and illustration on how much grease to apply to the hub.
