Smoothline tops

Post by onsight512 »

Does anyone know if the Smoothline tops for the high-windshield cars normally only have two front attachment points? There's one for sale locally and it only has to "j-bolts" to attach to the windshield frame.
Additionally, could someone show me what the hardware looks like that Smoothline uses to hook the j-bolts in to? They do not look like there's any reasonable way to hook/attach them to the factory attachment point.

many thanks,
Chris

The hard top and soft tops use the same hardware. You are probably not seeing a high windshield top but a low one. That's my guess.

The j hooks are what the Smoothline’s come with and they suck. They are meant to hook over the factory attachment points on the car. I made my own clips from an old factory set. I put a pic on one of the threads here. Smoothline currently sells a high windshield only. People on this forum have been working with Smoothline to develop a low windshield version. I’ve made my opinion pretty clear. I had a terrible experience with Smoothline. That said, I still use mine.

Thanks for the info. I've seen the thread where a member has 'loaned' their top to SL and does not appear to be able to get it back.

Without a doubt they are absolutely beautiful tops. We have a factory hard top for my wife's BMW Z3. It's a really nice top, but it weighs a lot! My old Roadster hard top was a one person job... not this one by any stretch!

The blue one is on my sr20 car. The black one on the red car is also mine and is the same top. It was covered in black “carbon fiber” vinyl that peeled off on a trip to the Williams car show. I had to strip it off and paint it.

I’ll see if I can get some interior pics. It’s hanging in my garage right now.

Yep. That’s John’s. His is black vinyl covered. He hasn’t had as many problems as I’ve had. His vinyl hasn’t peeled and his side brackets haven’t broken. The two differences are 1) He purchased his earlier before they changed the type of adhesive they used to adhere the side brackets; and 2). He has rarely used his top.
