Trying to remove the driveshaft seal and it just started crumbling. Been trying to pry but it wont

dislodge, I tried wd40 but it seems the rubber and medal are fused. This sucks. Any advice?

Do you have a seal pulling tool? Most people seem to use a screwdriver. If you can punch the edge of it to collapse it towards the shaft, it will come loose - BEWARE that you don't slip and punch the shaft though. This is what a seal puller looks like:

Hey there, I just did the same seal a couple times.

The good part is, the outer part of the seal has a harder component. So you pulled out the soft bits but all is not lost.

Either get some good, thin pliers (like knipex cobra) in and grab near the edge, then lever it 'out'. Or, get a thin screw driver or seal hook and tap it in between the seal and the outside of the housing, then pry inwards gently.

If that doesn't work, get a specialized seal tool.

At this point any damage to the seal is fine, just avoid beating up the transmission.

You don't hook the rubber when pulling - you try to hook the outer shell.

On the hard plastic seals, I've run a wood screw into the shell ( as close to the OD as you're brave enough to do without scoring the housing) then used a claw hammer to pull on the screw.

I managed to get it off. Now I just want to make sure I get the new gasket on Facing the correct way

I'm not familiar with the term "spring" side of the seal. Is that the open side with the ring channel as seen in this Timkin seal photo?

Usually they have a spring that provides tension for the seal as it rides on the shaft. The 'flat' part should face out towards you.
