Gauge lights

Digging into my dash to address some issues with old crusty gauges. Currently working on replacing the gauge lights with LEDs.
My question:
On the tach, it the tach cable/housing acting as a ground? Currently have the gauge fully disconnected and out of the dash. While testing the gauge lights, the light will only work if the light housing/socket is touching metal, and another socket is pressed firmly against where the cable screws in.

Your gauge is the ground which grounds to the dash. Tach cable has nothing to do with it.

Would you be willing to share which LEDs you are using? I am considering the same swap and would like to know.
Thanks!

Ok. That makes sense. So when the gauge is installed up in the dash (and not just being held in my hand) the lights should work. Thanks.

Got these off Amazon to try. Cheap and they work. Not glaringly bright. Light is MUCH cooler than incandescent however, much much blue-er.
