Let's talk oil pumps
I have read that an R16 oil pump will bolt in a U20 but the R16 pump is a downgrade?
My question is, why is it a downgrade and, specifically, which parts are different.
Thanks
Dan

Re: Let's talk oil pumps
As I understand it the R16 pump does not have as high a flow rate as the U20 pump.

Per Dean's website whom had a repro U20 Pump made at a great pricegreydog wrote: Tue Aug 17, 2021 5:11 pm I have read that an R16 oil pump will bolt in a U20 but the R16 pump is a downgrade?

"After market replica U20 oil pump. This pump is higher volume than the 1600 oil pump.
Same company makes after market oil pumps for Toyota, Nissan & Honda. This reputable company sells tens of thousands of pumps each year that are distributed all over the planet. They have a TS16949 designation; International quality certification and use CMM technology, Taiwan not Chinese, based company.
Almost 1/2 less in price then pumps being offered on the net.
2nd PHOTO: Two pumps shown for comparison. Aftermarket on the left, Nissan original on the right. You can hardly tell the difference inside and out. Absolutely amazing quality!
NOTE: 1600 and R20 owners can use this pump instead of the forklift or original Nissan 1600 pump.
IHM CO. has provided a laboratory test conformity report, included with the pump, comparing flow, pressure etc. between a New Nissan pump and the Aftermarket pump. Other pumps being sold on the net were not tested and are not marked as such.
Amazing how close the numbers are! There is also a test report comparing both pumps when installed in a 2000 roadster. This part is NOT made in China.
In vehicles all over the world for 10 years. Over 60,000 miles on some cars!

Re: Let's talk oil pumps
Ok. In order to flow more oil, the rotors in the U20 would have to be either taller or .larger in diameter, right?
Anyone have a U20 pump and an R16 pump who is willing to look to see what difference there is?

They are taller. I have both, but not handy. The 1600 unit is an iron case, the 2000 is aluminum. The gears that drive the oil are substantially taller on the 2000 unit.

Re: Let's talk oil pumps
Thank you? I bought one a while back that I was assured was a U20 pump but it looks like my R16 pumps. <sigh>

Is Taiwan better than Chinese? I thought they were about the same.DAC21 wrote: Tue Aug 17, 2021 5:24 pm They have a TS16949 designation; International quality certification and use CMM technology, Taiwan not Chinese, based company.
Other stuff deleted.
This part is NOT made in China.

When I was a kid, Made in Japan meant cheap junk. Now, it is quality.
Then, Made in Taiwan meant cheap junk. Now, apparently it means better than Chinese mainland.
And now, Made in China means inferior quality. But they sure make a lot of things.

If you send me an email sales@datsunparts.com with your phone number I will share with you the test report numbers of our pump; what the pressure values are at selected RPM's compared to the Nissan original U20 pump.

Re: Let's talk oil pumps
Yes Steve Asia has evolved. Taiwan has more Western educated engineers and has a lot of western support and influence so their products have improved. Chinese suspension parts are horrid. We have samples here of stuff that they tried to sell us that were scary to say the least and we declined to carry them.steve_car wrote: Wed Aug 18, 2021 7:57 pm When I was a kid, Made in Japan meant cheap junk. When people question us about our suspension and steering items, which all were tested and approved by Rare parts, I just bring the Chinese samples out, lay them on the counter and show them the difference and watch their eyes bulge.
It is always good to ask where parts are made prior to purchasing them and also ask for test reports
