Redtail,
Yes, I was kidding about the batteries. Here is something easy to do. Take a paper clip and make sure that the hole on the flange is clear. You can try blowing into it too. Once you are sure it is clear, put the vacuum on the carb side and play with it to see if it works. There is an O ring gasket in some of them that could have gotten pinched and blocked off the port. They are super simple in design. Also, try rotating the arm to see if it works at different angles.
Best of luck!

Is it a real genuine Edelbrock Uni-Syn, or the knockoff from ebay? The knockoff I got was a total piece of junk, I had to get Paypal to reverse the charge. It was visually good, but functionally wrong, holes in the wrong place, restrictor not centered etc. Also the Taiwan knockoff takes a special AC battery, much harder to find than the standard DC battery for the original.

Can I just say I think this web site is great.
For years I've had one of these balancing tools and not been able to get it to work. It was delegated to the far corner of the garage.
To take the backing plate off seems so obvious but no one I'd talked to had ever mentioned it nor had the instructions on the box said as much.
After reading the first few replies I ripped the complete filter assembly off the Solexes today and what do you know the thing worked.
The car is now much happier at idle as the balance was previously a long way out.
The owner is much happier too.
For anyone considering buying tools for DIY tuning I think these Carb balancers plus the Color Tune see through spark plugs and great assets for a tool box.
Keep up the questions as I've got a lot of holes in my knowlege.

Ausdat,
Glad to hear that some of the drivel that we are spewing is helping! Rather than waiting until the holes in your knowledge spontaneously fill, ask some questions. If we don't know the answer, we will make up some colorful lies!!
BTW, if you find an early open element solex aircleaner cluttering up your place too much, let me know. I have a closed unit in the garage and need and open unit for clearance at the brake master cylinder!
