Unisyn not working

Post by Redtail »

I just bought a new Unisyn carb balancing tool and I can't get it to work. The little red indicator won't rise up the gauge unless I rev the engine to like 4 grand. the unit is sealing fine, but hte gauge just isn't moving.

any ideas?

Have you adjusted the airflow disc (restrictor) on the UniSyn?

Initially...
With the engine idling press the Unisyn against one of the SU carb airhorns, restrict the airflow moving through the Unisyn by screwing the Unisyn airflow disc in. As you do this the red indicator on the Unisyn will rise up in the clear barrel.

Then proceed with balancing the carburetors.

It's tempting to try to balance the carbs while leaving the air cleaner backing plate on. Don't. Works much better if you take it off

Whoops... I didn't intend to imply that the Unisyn should be utilized with the air cleaner backing plate installed...I remove it to synch the carbs.
Was just at a loss for words as to what to call the end of the carburetor, "throttle bore" comes to mind now :?

its a neat tool.... i found one in my car from forever ago, it doesnt have the seal anymore so it doesnt work the best.
Not tryin to get off subject, but does anybody have an idea of what i can use for a gasket or does someone make one specifically for the tool?

Looks like some sort of sheet neoprene rubber gasket material to me

A while back, I replaced a security light outside the house. It came with a weather seal that was not needed. That weather seal is adhesive backed, about 1/16 or less thick and it was a foam material (closed cell). It would work perfectly.

Of course, Neoprene is easier to find. Cork would work too...

okay. so I'm pretty sure I'm using it correctly - take off the air cleaner and backing plate, properly seal the unisyn against the carb inlet, then crank down the air restricter until the red indicater rises up. I saw Keith do the exact same thing to my carbs at Solvang and it worked fine.

with my unisyn though I can crank the air restricter plate all the way down and the red indicater won't budge and the car will start running relaly rough b/c that carb isn't getting air.

On the bright side, my carbs are pretty well tuned already so it's no rush. And my Libras are looking better after some cleaning!

Did you replace the batteries in it?

Also, check to see if the hole at the bottom of the tube that the red thingy rides in is obstructed...

If there's oil or moisture contamination in the indicator tube, the indicator will stick and not rise to the occasion.

Zack,

trust me on this if the batteries on the unisyn donot work...

Swap out your engine to SR-20 and go EFI,this way you can sell your unisyn on craigslist and use 20-40 dollars profit towards the cost of your engine swap.....Easy,don't thank me...Glad I could help

gene
