Speedo cable problem

My speedometer cable broke under the car after it got twisted. I removed it and replaced it with a new one. When first put on it worked but bounced some on the gauge. Eventually it stopped working all together. I checked it and made sure it was engaged in the gauge by hooking it to a drill. Worked fine but then when i hooked it back in the transmission it doesn’t register at all. By process of elimination, I’m guessing it is not engaging in the transmission. How does this mechanism work at the transmission end of the cable? The cable seems fine.

4 speed or 5 speed? 4 speeds have a right angle gear box on the speedometer cable.

I have seen cables where the wire on the inside was a little short. As the inside slid back and forth over time it would disengage from the drive and quit working.

Either a short drive wire, or the cable sheath retainer nuts not fully screwed down on pinion carrier and/or speedometer back. (Just went through this when the upper cable end retainer backed off the speedometer back, leaving the square drive pin end of the cable swiveling until it failed, lodging itself in the speedometer. Used a magnet end pickup to pull it free.)

This is a 4 speed. What do you mean by a right angle gear box? The end of the cable i got is straight. is it the wrong cable? It fit ok but again it isn’t registering

On the 4-speeds there should be a right angle gear drive. It is a separate part from the cable. I'm sure we have one or two or five...

If the speedo works normally driven with a grill, the nylon or brass gear in the transmission that drives the cable is probably stripped. (the steel gear on the mainshaft never really fails)

To inspect the gear, remove the circular black speedo gear sleeve that you have been attaching the cable to. It is held in place by a tab and bolt and an o-ring, but will slide right out. Some 90weight will probably drip on you lol..
