Setback Monday - cheer me up guys
Transmission that was rebuilt many years ago finally got filled and has a front seal leak

Let it soak for some time in trans oil by upending the case, it may repair itself

Everything was rebuilt and assembled dry many years ago and put in storage... now I'm feeling like every seal is gonna be the same story.

Front seals are inexpensive and easy enough to replace.

Not cursed, just an old car junkie. Two steps forward and one step back is to be expected. Just grit your teeth, say a few choice words, and pull it out and fix it. If it’s a small leak you may want to put a few hundred miles on it first just to be sure there are no other problems.

true minus the engine pull.

Maybe someone to commiserate with may help. I have a clutch with 600 miles on it that got oil/grease on the disc and needs to be replaced. I’ve had the engine out once and did the ol brake clean and a rag trick, but appears to be back and slipping under high load. It may have a groove worn where the seal lip contacts the steel ....a trick to stop the leak is not to install the seal as far as it was so the lip isn't in the worn place I remember our trans tech having this problem
Also it may be in the groove but cocked on the ridge ....yeah still has to be pulled though
How filled is it ? You can drive it low , a inch below the fill plug, even close to 2 " with the lite duty

I feel for you. After putting my engine/trans in two years ago when I pressed on the clutch I got a squeal. The clutch release bearing was seized. It has been a long time but I recall a situation like yours where the seal lip got stuck to the shaft so it tore when it turned. If the shaft has a problem as redroaster notes you can put a Speedi-Sleeve on it

Allegedly it was a full rebuild so you'd hope they would have addressed a worn input shaft buuut you never know.

Since it leaked half a cup right off the bat there is probably an issue with the seal. It’s unlikely that the shaft could be worn that much. As far as the other seals, transmission and oil seals usually don’t deteriorate to badly under non use conditions. Seals in brake fluid are another story.
Sure it’s a pain in the rear, but what choice do you have? Better to get right on it than to put if off where you run the risk of just never feeling like doing it. Good luck, it will be worth the frustrations when your done!

Make sure the trans vent isn't plugged up ( mini dirt dauber , spiders)
