1968 Steering Shaft back onto New Steering Box

Post by devauxmidwest »

Putting the new steering box into the '68 Roadster. Is the steering shaft keyed to fit on the steering box splines?

Yes, the notch has to line up with the cross bolt.

Thanks. What is the best way to center the steering box before attaching to the steering shaft? When I removed the Pitman arm it was pointing straight to the front of the car with the steering wheel centered. When I turn the gear on the steering box I get a little less than three complete turns lock-to-lock. When I center the steering gear ( a little less than 1 1/2 turns) and I put on the Pitman arm the Pitman arm points a little to the left of center of the car. Also the U joint slot doesn't line up on the steering box shaft slot using the 1 1/2 turns to center. Is there a procedure to get everything lined up correctly and have the steering box centered?

I need to know this as well. Has anyone written up a How To on replacing the steering box and or Idler. I have rebuilds of both but a a little nervous getting started. I too have a 68.

Is there anything that I should do to the steering shaft before I put the box back in and connect the shaft to the box?
