How to Remove Exterior Door Handle on a '68

I'm trying to remove the exterior door handles to send them out for chroming. I've got the door panel off and have removed the nuts holding the door handle. I removed the clip on the rod that connects to the door handle but I haven't figured out how to get the rod to release from the door handle. There is a white plastic bushing on the end of the rod where the rod attaches to the door handle. How does that bushing come off of the rod? The bushing had the spring clip that I removed behind it.

Before I screw something up, how do I get the door handle to disconnect from the door?

Thanks very much.

The rod should pop out of the plastic bushing in the handle. Bushing should stay in the handle and the rod stays in the door. Use a long flat blade screw driver to pop it off. It's and interference fit in the plastic bushing - careful not to damage the plastic bushing. They can get brittle with age and break...

NOS handles were available through Nissan and some of our vendors. Probably for less than the cost of re-plating. All new parts also. Might e a better way to go. FWIW Pat

Anyone know what a ball park cost would be for chroming two handles?

chroming all depends on where you live - in SOCal - tres spendy - early Z will also fit - as previously posted - new/oem

Dean sells for $71 ea. - I would imagine this would be a good deal - and depending on your condition - might make a few $ to recoup a bit
