Broke my Comp oil pan!

So I was driving my '69 2000 Roadster around today enjoying some of our first nice weather this year and as I came around a corner there was a softball size rock in my lane and a car coming the other way so I couldn't swerve around it. Whump!! I knew that wasn't good and pulled over into a nearby parking lot and jumped out to see oil pouring out of my competition oil pan. It still had good oil pressure when I shut it down so I didn't do any engine damage. The 7.5 quart capacity probably helped.

So...

Does anyone have a Competition oil pan they would like to sell?

It can be welded. Mine shows considerable damage though it looks more like from a broken timing chain. But mine has been welded up front as well as the drain plug. No need to replace it. I've had mine 35 years and (knock on wood) never hit anything, but it is battle scarred.

Sorry I thought I was responding to the OP, I didn't even see your post, but obviously clicked on it. But I was wondering the same if it could be TIG welded??

My welds are more apparent inside on the front, but you get the idea. It's totally solid. The engine happens to be on a stand right now. Yours should be easy to fix. It's also possible that your baffling will need some attention too as they tend to crack where they bolt on, and once they start they just keep cracking. Mine has been welded and reinforced... ugly but it works.

Just take it off the car and have it welded like Greg said. It’s a very easy fix.

Also the drain plug is at the front for easier access for home mechanics .

( you can actually reach it without getting under the car)

The casting quality is better than the original as well. It a very nice piece.

Wow, that sucks. The good news is that a good aluminum welder can fix it. Its likely not a large point of failure. My comp pan was attacked by a timing chain long before I got the car. Someone welded the damage up and unless you are right under the car, you can't see that anything was done to it. The pan doesn't leak either. I'd vote, just get it welded and go from there.

I think it was a rock and a broken comp pan that led to Alvin's SR swap...

The Alfa owners in the know don't run sump guards as all they do is reduce ground clearance more. Odds are an impact big enough to damage the oil pan will dent the sump guard into the sump anyway and potentially crack it. Do Alfa guys run them? Yep, but I think you will find that most of the long time owners dont' have them.

I know I drove my lowered GTV without one for 6 years with no issues. (And would still be driving it that way if someone hadn't rear ended me, punting me into a ditch.)

100K miles on my roadster, 50k+ on my Alfa and never had any contacts with rocks.

Well there you go, something you see on the market that isn't even used. Thanks for the info. (makes sense it would reduce ground clearance)
