Possible Parts issue with discontinued front Brake Cylinder

Post by DAC21 »

Most but not all of the ten or so On-line Nissan Parts Dealerships I checked today are showing the Inner Dunlop / Sumitomo Brake Cylinder as discontinued. (41101-14600) I'm not finding that SO FAR for the outer Cylinder 41100-14600

the same OEM part is used for the Jaguar XKE 1961-1968 and those have almost dried up as well, I managed to find two new ones for under $100 a pop under the Genuine brand. My brakes / car has sat for 40 years so I didn't want to take a chance of what I will find when I dig into it so I made the purchase. Parts Geeks is OOS on the Jaguar part but reviews indicated the ones they received were from Nissan so I was comfortable purchasing under the Genuine name. Hopefully it's a case of the Japan OEM needing to run another batch?? Seems odd the outer cylinder is widely available. Maybe some of the Venders can chime in with their two cents. If this holds true the back up for sleeving at Karps is going to go from bad to worst.

Apple Hydraulics is showing rebuilt ones in stock, not inexpensive by any means though. They are resleeving my cylinders as we speak. https://www.applehydraulicsonline.com/c ... 3144767591

Apple hydraulics is resleeving mine too as we speak. They said I'd get them back this week. Price seems pretty reasonable.

Yeah not to bad if you are sending in your own cylinders. Of course add two way shipping.

4 cylinders fit in the smallest USPS flat rate priority mail box, so it wasn’t much to get them there.

Sleeving is THE only way to go as far as I'm concerned. I just rebuilt mine which were sleeved with stainless at least 15 years ago. They were still perfect inside. All it cost me was a kit.

When I talked to the Apple people, they discouraged stainless unless the car was going to sit for really extended periods. They said the brass was less harsh on the seals, so tended to be better for “daily” use. Who knows but I was fine paying the lower brass price...stainless would be an extra $55 x 4 from them.

The issue is the finish of the sleeve i.e smoothness.
Brass or stainless with the same finish will affect the seals the same way.
Brass is much easier to machine and cheaper as a material than stainless.

Carl Jaeger in Vancouver did mine and the finish was smooth as can be. At that time I had no idea about brass. The rebuild I just did I used a dremel fine grit abrasive wheel and just polished them a bit.

41100 is the inner (has the bleeder screw) and also fits '63 -- '67 Jags; 41101 is the outer and does not fit the Jags b/c the threads are different in one of the ports.

Yep, I got that backwards and subsequently bought the inners which aren't showing discontinued. Oh well I needed them as well and $92 is pretty good price. According to a Roadster Parts website I ran across the Roadster inner cylinder is run in both positions on the Jags.
