I have an extra left front fender...parts of it unpainted or un-primed (inside was undercoated by PO). It is developing surface rust..so what should I clean it up with, then protect it with?

Any good rust converter and primer, with my favorite being Sems Rust Seal as it will not require painting over it to protect the metal, but you can go ahead and rattle can some primer on it if desired. Other converters may require primer. Treat any rust with the Sems Rust Seal (not Rust mort) and it will not come back. 30+ years on my car.

thanks, Greg ... tricky thing is doing a search here in Canada turns up no local suppliers ... maybe it goes by a different name up here. Maybe rustcheck?

I'll have a closer look at the labels.

WD40 will leave a film that can temporarily curb rust. It all depends where you are storing the fender. Outdoors will even get rust .under primer if left to the elements.

+1 for WD-40/CRC 5-56 etc.
A painter advised this treatment and said "if you use that product we will know how to clean and prep the panels for painting".

WD40 is a temporary solution but effective, works great on rotors, bare sheet metal, anything that is going to sit for a while. Not good for a base for paint. Some of you might not know that Ralph’s car was previously owned by a local guy that rolled on tremclad white and sanded between coats. Compared to a little bit of WD40 on a section of flash rust on a fender is a minor clean up compared to when and if he decides to repaint his car.
Go to Canadian tire and buy some sand paper, or scotch brite, remove rust, and get a can of good spray bomb primer. Sitting in a car port is the cause of oxidization . try to find a dry storage for your fender.
