Engine Differences

I tried to research this on tech wiki and parts websites, but unable to find good answers. My car is a 68 sold as a 69 (confirmed VIN) with 1600 engine. I have almost finished dismantling the engine and was getting ready to start ordering parts. I ran the engine number (R-104808) which when looking at the list on the Rallye website, this should be a 66 engine. :( Am I understanding this correctly? I realize that there are some differences, but not many. So, what should I be worried about? I am concerned about which parts I should order. I know the valve seals are different, but I believe the 68 seals fit and may be better, but I cannot confirm that. I know the water pumps are different, but we all know the many options on water pumps Other things to look out for? Thanks for any advice on this matter.

Looks to me like a 1970 block from the Rally website. 1970 block numbers start at 93500 and the very end of the R-16 line is at 120200. Scroll down to engine numbers:

Steve, I am curious about what makes your roadster a '68?

Thank you for the replies!
Wow, my brain put an extra digit in there or left one out! Good call. So I have a 70 block. I am thinking there is no real difference between a 68 and a 70 engine. There is no smog equipment on this car. No jet valves, etc.
VIN# SP311-18278 says it is a 68 for the way I read it, but again I could be wrong.

Check the distributor to see what curve it has.

Certainly possible that a non smog head was bolted to a later engine. Best to be sure the. Can you post a picture of the port side of the head looking from above as you would see it it the engine was in the car and you were looking at the carbs.

I believe it is a smog head that has been plugged.

Correct, late model head matches engine block s/n range. You will be fine ordering parts for late model engine.
Back to C.Costines question, what makes you think it's a 68?
There are some dead giveaways. A picture of the rear, the side and the speedo/tach should tell. Possible some parts have been swapped but not likely all the differences.
