Re: SU carb needles under piston s
I don't want to hijack your thread, but I just bought some RA needles from ZTherapy. I put them in on Saturday, and my car, which I've owned for appx 30 years, has never run better. No more fat idle, no more stumbling at 2,700 rpm. Idle is now really stable. Clean power all the way through 6,500 (I didn't take it higher because I'm still shaking the car down).
The profile of the new needles is thicker at idle than whatever I had in there (i.e. leaner mixture) and thinner at the balance of the "stations" i.e. richer. Also, the needles are almost 1/4 inch longer than the ones that were there. I have to heel/toe and double clutch a lot due to worn syncros, and the stability through the band makes this much easier now.
I just thought I'd pass this along since it is somewhat relevant to this thread.

Hey Lorna, I think Todd has a 2L so his needles will be different than what you need for a 1600. I run ADQ needles in my 1600 and they seem to work well. ADQ's seems well accepted on the site for the 1600. Mine also came with the little hat on them. I set the hat loose in a vice and gently tapped the needle out. Just be gentle and have something soft to catch the needle as it falls out.

You may need to call or email Bruce at Z therapy. I seem to recall not seeing the needles on their inventory page so I emailed him and he got back to me with his recommendation. My car is indeed a 2 litre.

I bought mine from here: SU Midel
A ways away, but... I had time at the time. I bought a couple other models based on what people said on the site about where 1600's normally run rich and lean, but I haven't tried them yet and I gave away my O2 meter, so I might not try them.

Re: SU carb needles under piston s
If that is the going rate for quality needles ($18.70 US) the two sets (1600+2000) that come with the $50 Kester SU rebuild kit must not be all that good. I don't know that I necessarily need them as I was more after the Float Valves and gaskets in the kit. No telling what kind of fun surprises I'll find in my SU's after 40 years of sitting.RustBucket wrote: Sun Jan 31, 2021 10:54 pm I bought mine from here: SU Midel

Re: SU carb needles under piston s
The Keyster needles are likely close copies of the original ones. The ones in the link have better fuel characteristics for the 1600 in a Roadster.
