5 speed conversion, other than a Datusn?

Post by jr02518 »

First, I have been looking at the obvious 5 speed option for my 1600 but I would like to ask, has any one considered the "what and if" of a Mazda Miata 5 speed option?

I have mutable old cars, one is a 1960 MGA coupe. Moss offers a Miata box that will even work with the 3 bearing 1800 MGB engine in my car. I had and competed with a 1995 Miata in E Street with the SCCA and can confirm it handled the competition with out issue.

I understand the swap will require a bit of entering and the car will no longer be "stock", but the often repeated discusion of the floppy 4 speed begs the question, what if?

But yes, I am keeping the old 4 speed in my car. It's not broken, yet.

I don't think that anyone has pursued that possibility. I recall some discussion on the Datsun Racing forum about a Quaife transmission, but don't recall details.

I did a little snooping. Taylor Race Engineering sells an adaptor plate to put a Quaife type 9/Rocket box behind a 240Z bell housing. Since the 240Z bellhousing bolts to a Roadster 5 speed, I would guess that you could use it to put the Quaife into a Roadster. I don't know for certain though.

Thank you for the response. In my case, a street level box would be my goal. Looking at the required components, I come up with:
1. Adapter for the engine/gear box.
2. Starter
3. Flywheel/clutch package to include through out bearing
4. Drive shaft
5. Interior finish, depending on where the shifter ends up.
6. Speedo interface
7. The clutch on the Miata box is hydraulic, the Datsun has a wet system to connect to, needed?
8. Transmission mount.

Am I missing anything?

With the 1600 motor, is there a difference between the 3 and 5 bearing motors as to the flywheel, clutch( clutch disk/pressure plate) through out bearing and clutch fork?

Thank you in advance.
