Mikuni Solex Intake Manifold for U20 - Prepping to sell

Post by iloveredmeat »

Hi All,
I have a U20 Solex intake manifold that I won't be needing for my R16 Stroker, so I'm prepping it for sale or trade.

The manifold has newly installed insulators and gaskets, and I'm trying to remove those for use on my R16. But, oh my gosh! It's really hard, if not impossible.

I can see that some glue/adhesive has been used (white). I've tried a razor blade (maybe too conservatively?), but I can't even get 1/16" of penetration... I don't want to screw anything up, so I'm being very careful, but I don't know if it's even possible to do it that way.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've heard maybe rubbing alcohol will help break down the adhesive? Any experience with that?

Do I dare hammer the studs?

Or... do I just leave the insulators intact? And if I do that, can I expect enough of a premium for the manifold with insulators to cover the cost of buying new insulators and gaskets to use on my stroker? Insulators and gaskets looks to be over $250!

All thoughts, advice, prayers, or baked goods are welcome and appreciated.

Thank you,
Peter

A friend just sold one of those bare for $750. I don't think that I would want to take the chance of screwing the surfaces up. If the insulators look very good you should be able to get a 35-50% premium for them.

Thank you C.Costine.

I tried a little more last night, with zero success. I don't have the guts to really lean into it, the last thing I want to do is mess anything up.

And since everything is in such good condition, ready to bolt on, I think I'll take your advice and leave everything intact...

Thanks again,
Peter

Go to the auto parts store and get a spray on gasket remover, coat it and walk away for an hour and see what happens.

Why risk ruining the isolators? Just leave them on..new ones are available from multiple sources.

Thanks JT.

And thanks Dave, that may work, but I'm going to play it safe and leave them on as Costine and JT recommend...

I was just hoping to minimize my expenses, as this manifold is really my only way to recoup a portion of the cost of my carburetors.

Thanks a lot you guys, I really appreciate your advice.

Happy holidays to you all.
