Water Pump Plate Pitting

The back plate on my water pump has a lot of pitting. It's all over the inner side and also next to the lower opening on the outer side.

A friend suggested filling in the pitting with RTV. I was thinking of going with JB Water Weld.

Which would you pick? Other suggestions?

Thanks!

Buy new aftermarket, rebuild what you have? Really not enough info why the plate is pitted? Gasket leak?, It's the original 55 year old WP?

Time for a new water pump? No to silicone, it will never stay. First clean out all of the rust. I have been having good luck with Evaporust. JB Weld might stay. My go to would be to braze to fill the pits. As a practical matter, if there are no perforations a good clean and paint would be fine.

It is my understanding that the pitting comes from chemical/electrical reactions in the coolant. The backplate is steel, which is one of the few items in the coolant system of that material. Saw that in my first Roadster, but cleaned it up and continued to use it. A scheduled replacement of the coolant can go a long way to mitigating the effects of such rust/corrosion, as it replenishes the antioxidants.
