SR20 Oil Pan Finish Protection.

Post by Jdflyer »

Hi Everyone, Hope all is well and you and your families have been keeping healthy. I have taken some time off from everything, really just conserving fund as I work for the airlines, but have gotten a bit stir crazy lately and have decided to start finishing my motor that I'm building.

I just got finished bead blasting my oil pan (first item with the HF blast cabinet) and I'm looking at how to best protect it going forward and I wanted to get some professional opinions.
  1. Clear Powder Coat (Satin or Gloss?)
  2. Clear Coat Spray Can (Hi Temp maybe?)
  3. Some other process?
Here's a photo of the finished pan. I used Abrasive glass and glass bead to finish. 5 gal air compressor (I need a larger one as it took forever with the short burst and then waiting to recharge).

Thanks,
JD

The high temp paint (2000 deg) is very durable . Not sure if the pan is supposed to disperse heat? Anyway that hi temp paint meant for headers is good . I think I used the 500 deg stuff on the pan and the 2000 on header.

I do not believe so. Header pic, painted 5 years ago at least... subject to high heat of course. Silver matte color.

I got the intake manifold of my '67 1600 powder coated silver. It has gone over 3,000 miles with no deterioration visible. An oil pan shouldn't get hot enough to be a problem for any common coating.

It would appear neither of us read the title of the thread LOL! It is an SR20. I was going crazy looking at the flat valve cover and distributor location. Based on the the OP's car info I figured he had an R16. I guess he is going to drop that in at some point? (I wasn't referring to Linda's photo, maybe I threw you off?)
