brakes howling at low speed, intermittent

Post by FergusO »

Hey gang,
my brakes are howling during low speed braking, once warmed up.
this has been since I replaced the pistons and pads.
is this a shim thing? there weren't any there before, and how do you know how many and which side to put them.
brakes work fine, but are driving me crazy when in traffic.
Thanks for any advice, FergusO

Do they howl or screach? New rotors-old rotors? Are your caliper pistons all functioning correctly? You know sometimes they stick and do not release properly. Did you get the new pads bedded in after you put them on? I like to go out for a test drive after a brake job and apply the brakes vigoriously a few times to get things aquainted. How many miles on the new brakes?

new parts, well 'bedded'

Hey Steve,
thanks for checkin' in.
They aren't grinding, pad on rotor, more of a real high howl.
New calipers and pads, old rotors, and I got them acquainted pretty vigorously. Didn't do any rotor scrubbing in order to resurface, don't really want to turn them if I don't have to.
Now they probably have 500 miles or so.
Work fine, and only howl at real low speeds.
Time for a teardown and retighten, I guess.
thanks for the info, Fergus O (midway thru changing back to stock seats from Honda CRX)
