Low but even compression

Post by redroadster68 »

Hi all
Car has Mikuni/solex phh44, starts, idles, but spits and farts under any load. New fuel filter, fresh 94 gas, plugs gapped to .40, fuel pump working, fuel to carb, spark on all plugs. First checked it out, one plug was black. Drove.... limped around block now all plugs black. Ran like a top just prior to this issue. Thoughts. ? My fellow roadsterites

Oh ya... it’s a 2000
Compression is Low at 150 even across them all . All plugs out and throttle wide open. Cold

Check to see if the solex starters are stuck. Sounds like its running rich.

Spark shrinks under compression
Plug or plugs fouled ? Points/ condensor newish?
Running lean on a carb ?
Timing centrifugal advance free ?
Fuel pumping to carb good ...not restricted ( vacuum pump test)
Clean the plugs 1st or replace
but is it flooding out on a carb

Did nozzles return home on choke? Compression is good at 150. Linkage for choke sticks many times.

Confirm ignition firing order 1,3,4,2. I ran that same set up for 80 miles when I did my first engine 35 yrs ago with the wrong order. It ran but snarfed through the carbs all the time, even at idle.

Stock mechanical fuel Pump? If not, make sure it's no more than 3-4lbs pressure max. If the carbs are flooding, could be a needle and seat issue where the fuel level is being allowed to go to high. Mikuni and the like are sensitive to fuel levels in the carb. However, I'm going with my first post...

Hi everyone. Thanks for all chimin in ,,, sometimes it’s the things right in front of your eyes. After chatting with lots of friends and mechanics alike, it was something so simple. I replaced the Coil and now all is right with the world. So yes, it was the f&#$* COIL Runs great now. I replaced the old one with a brand new Pertronex Flamethrower....I just liked the name. Lol
So thanks all.
Just came back from a 3 hr drive. Runs great. Zero stumble off the line
