5 speed problem

Post by Datsun 440 »

Hope somone can help. When I torque the main shaft nut on my 5 speed it locks up the 5th gear.It can only be torque to 80 ft lbs when this happens. Not the required 150 .The 5th gear main shaft bushing seems to be to short by about 10 thousands.Does anyone know the proper length. My bushing measures 1.340 inches.

I went and checked some spare tranny gears and the 5th gear apppears to be around 1.320 and the bushing which the gear rides on with 2 rows of needle bearings is 1.327 thick. I tend to destroy syncros so I have 2 transmissions. The one in the car and its replacement. I had to add a shim to one of them between the 5th gear and the bushing. I don't know if the bearing was a different thickness but I had to notch the bushing to get the small ball bearing to clear the bushing.
