my front su float was partially full and not shutting off fuel. I boiled the gas out but there were holes at every bend( not truly circular ) after it was empty i shellaced it which is an old timer fix I once heard. Will ethanol in the gas wash the shellac off? Is there a way to seal them more permanently? Or buy 2 plastic ones for $48 each.

If I was you, I'd buy the float. A flatbed on the highway will cost you a lot more when the float fails again.

Brass floats are soldered in my experience. Just get the newer plastic ones and eliminate any future float problems.

That low temp solder would have Trumped the shellac
It could work for 4 more years
