Getting close to dropping in the engine and tranny. The original wiring is surprisingly intact and in good condition. The only one that's questionable is on driver's side. There's a bundle ground wires that are screwed to frame. One loose, heavier gauge wire is not connected and has a frayed connector. Looks like a ground to me. Any ideas of where it goes? TIA Pat

I think that cable should have an eye connection and it is clamped under one of the starter motor fasteners.
Check that it does connect to ground not battery.

Yes, there should an eyelet on the end, and that is a block to chassis to fender grounding bond on a '68.

Does the wire have a sleeve on it and longer than the other two? If so it is the temp sender wire for a 1600. The two ground wires do not have sleeves.

That seems to make sense. Has sleeve and appears to be white? insulation. Should I be able to trace it to temp gauge? TIA Pat

Should be yellow with a white stripe. Goes directly to the temp gauge through the dash harness.

Here's what it should look like. Depending upon your temp sender you either need a 4mm fork terminal for the screw type or a bullet terminal if you have the newer replacement sender.

If you need a replacement wire let me know. You take the old out from the plug at the firewall and run the new one down and tape it on.

Or you could scab on a new piece of yellow 18g up by where it exits the harness.
